ATV deaths often involve teens, kids Review of fatal accidents discovers many youths, often riding illegally; Facts about ATV deaths Some details from the Associated Press' analysis of all-terrain vehicle fatalities from 1986 to 1995. 79 people died, including 12 children younger than 12, 27 teenagers and 40 men and women age 20 and older. The youngest victim was 4; the oldest was 82. Six victims were female: four girls and two women. Most of the deaths, 53%, resulted from collisions, and 28% involved rollovers. About 35% of the accidents were attributed to operator fault and to operator fault combined with other causes such as speed and inexperience. Excessive speed was cited in 30% of the accidents and excessive alcohol was called a factor in 25%. Alcohol was a factor in 70% of accidents involving victims age 18 or older; 60% were legally drunk. 12 victims or 15% wore helmets.
Seventy-nine people were killed riding all-terrain vehicles in Wisconsin in the last decade, nearly half of them children and teenagers often riding illegally, an Associated Press review found. A dozen victims were younger than 12, even though state law generally bars them from riding the powerful
